    Web-design: a team game

Francesca Scarpa / 2021-02-08 / Design, Media, Web

The website of a business is an increasingly important showcase and for many sectors it is now mandatory. It must be communicative, captivating, interesting and be able to capture the web surfer with valid and quick content to be noticed, it is in fact known that the internet public is very selective and demanding and devotes a maximum of ten seconds to decide if it is worth stopping to look at the pages of a site or leave it without hesitation.

Nowaday to make a website without many pretensions, it’s unnecessary to know a programming language (although advisable). It can also be done for free through some platforms with pre-configured themes. There are numerous guides on how to make your own website by more or less independently on the internet. On the other hand, what is challenging to know if you are not in the trade is how to design a quality website that can bring added value to the business and present itself on the web in a competitive way.

Therefore, In this article, I will not talk about making a website, but about how the collaborative design between client and web-designer occurs.

Now, let’s see some points that must be clear before starting a web design project:

    1. The communication goals

Starting from the reference sector and a possible market survey, the communication objectives are the first set.

Faced with the opportunity of an online showcase, the first question to ask is: “How do I want to represent my business?” and “what do I want to communicate?“.

Questions that inevitably involve communication and marketing choices and strategies and will define aspects of site design.

These are questions that the owner must ask himself, with the possible help of a communication expert, and that must find their answers before reaching the designer’s desk, who can make proposals but not choose solutions.

    2. The functionality

Website functionality can be: the function of a blog in which to publish articles, it can be a professional portfolio, can list the services of a company and can act as a virtual shop and much more. In any case, the site will have its operating specifications and development features.

Each feature matches different technical development approaches, and as technicians, it is good that they remain at the discretion of the web-designer and his development team.

Relying on professionals who can give the correct advice is equivalent to achieving the necessary goals using the best technology without wasting time and using the proper tools.

The necessary information for these assessments are::

    • Function (e-commerce / blog / CV / etc.)
    • Updates and update schedule
    • Autonomy in content updates
    • Multilingual technology

Once these points have defined, together with a development approach, then we start talking about design-

    3. The content

Contents are the bricks that make up the face of the site. Knowing the material available from the beginning allows the web designer to consciously design the site in a single organic and rational solution, making the most of the layout and using the best images.

The graphic contents are the more influential, the more the communication choices want to go “emotional”. Therefore, it is essential to choose or create correct contents, and an excellent graphic designer will be able to draw some to add value to the project.

    4. The graphic project

Web design, like graphics, is not a pure art field sector but is part of the technical disciplines in which functionality dictates the rules and where creativity depends on the user experience.

In continuous training, a good web designer will know how to develop the right proposal and advise the client on the best techniques with the right curiosity and attitude to dialogue.

Relying on a professional’s hands means starting a dialogue to make yourself known and explain your own vision and expectations.

Some of the aspects of web graphics are: :

    • Style
    • Appearance
    • Layout
    • Font
    • Colors
    • Graphic content
    • User experience
    • Web usability

The issues surrounding these points are extensive and concern the visual hierarchy, the psychology of perception, the study of the gaze and its tracking during reading on the monitor, the residence times of the various pages, the dynamics of interaction with the user and others. Each of these points deserves pages and pages to be explained bat a good web designer will know how to apply them for you at best.

    5. Full support

    The technical requirements:

    • Domain
    • Hosting
    • Platform choice (joomla/wordpress/magento/wix/..) o HTML
    • Safety

    The technical support:

    • Recurring backup
    • Insertion and updating of content or any teaching for autonomy
    • Mailbox configuration
    • SEO e search engine optimization
    • Social media marketing
    • Statistics

A communication agency, an IT company or a web-designer can offer specialized technical services to develop a competitive, complete and an easily updatable result with content or plug-ins always at the keep up with the times, professional work in every area and without flaws.
